Arriba, Arriba!
(Can You Roll Your ‘R’s?)

Salsa de JicamaThis week we have Salsa de Jicama which is a tried and true Hispanic recipe in my household.. brought to us by my best friend and kitchen partner-in-crime, Rosa! This recipe is so easy to prepare + no cooking required.. and it’s a perfect appetizer, side dish, snack, meal, and more. The blend of fresh veggies, juices, and bold seasonings makes for a muy bien dish!

Pachyrhizus erosus, commonly known as jícama, Mexican yam, or Mexican turnip, is the name of a native Mexican vine, although the name most commonly refers to the plant’s edible tuberous root.

Jicama can often be overlooked when browsing through the grocery store, but once you have this recipe you’ll make a point to always have some Jicama sticks in your fridge!

Did you know that Jicama is power packed with Vitamin C? And due to containing low calories, being low in sodium and high in fiber, the root is a great tool for weight loss. One small jicama root contains about 4 milligrams of iron – that amounts to about 22% of the daily recommended allowance.. and is full of potassium! As if you didn’t already love this dish enough 😉

Ingredients:
½ cup red onion, diced
sea salt, to taste
4 tbsp of lime juice
1 jicama, diced
1 red pepper, diced
1 bunch chopped cilantro
1 avocado, diced
½ tsp of turmeric, cumin and cayenne

Instructions:
1. Add the red onion to a medium sized bowl and mash with fork. Mix in the rest of the ingredients and mix together well.

2. Serve and enjoy!

Hi! Here, in Mexico, we eat jícama just adding lemmon, some salt and powder chile (we can’t live without chile, hehehe). We usually eat it as a snack. I use jícama also in fresh salads, with cucumber, lettuce, carrot (every thing raw), “jitomate” (red tomato), etc., obviously with lemmon.

    See you!

Yum! I love chile powder here and there, it’s a good cleanser and great to have with meals seeing as it keeps your drinking water the entire time! Caliente 😉 Thanks for sharing!

Another yummy way to enjoy jicama! Thanks for the recipe! =)
