My plant-based flying adventure to Germany
I was so excited when my daughter Brittany invited me to Berlin Germany for two weeks for a visit. Brittany, her husband Tristan, and my gorgeous grandson Jameson moved to Berlin at The beginning of August 2011.

It had been three months since I had seen them …. which for me was too long. Lula ( A.K.A grandma) needed some Jameson cuddles. We decided that I would fly to Germany at the end of October and stay through the first half of November. I had all of my arrangements taken care of and my bags packed. I felt really fortunate that with the help of a friend (He worked his travel agent magic) I was able to fly first class all the way there and back with only 130,000 flyer miles on Lufthansa ! I decided to pack my own plant-based food since I was really sceptical about what food I might receive on a 16 hour journey.I had asked for vegan meals on all the flights but generally the meals are less than stellar. With my homemade quinoa veggie bowls and chopped fresh fruit in my carry on bag,I boarded the plane and headed for Germany. The first leg was from Las Vegas to Houston. I was pleasantly surprised to be served a nice mixed greens salad and a fruit bowl.I decided to supplement the meal with some of my delicious quinoa bowl.First two and a half hours were perfect in the food department.
After a brief layover in Houston I boarded my airplane with Lufthansa to fly first to Frankfort Germany and then into Berlin. As I entered the plane I was quickly greeted with a smile and told to walk to the upper level of the plane. I was greeted by Greta who was one of Three Awesome stewardess’ that would care for my every need while on my journey to Germany.
As Greta seated me she informed me that I would receive both first class seats in my row. Lufthansa now only has 8 first class seats sold per flight instead of sixteen…lucky break for me:)
Greta offered me champagne but I opted for the flat water with lemon and fresh macadamia nuts.

Soon after take off I recieved a menu in english that described the fancy chefs background and what meals would be available.
The chef had headed up Ritz Carlton’s many restaurants as well as traveled ,trained and worked in some the best restaurants all over the world. They also had an above average wine list that rivaled some of the nicer restaurants that I have been to. This did seem a bit over the top but hey It was first class after all.
I informed Greta that I had ordered a vegan meal so she happily took care of the details. i just sat back and relaxed.
My appetizer and award wining Pinot grigio arrived. I enjoyed a delicious endive stuffed with mushrooms and cherry tomatoes stuffed with a mustard bean puree…It was divine!
I usually never drink alcohol on a flight but I thought this was a special treat …I only had a few sips anyway.
Course number two was a delicious chickpeas salad with rocket lettuce and cucumber with a lemon drizzle.
Course number three was a nice mixed green salad.

Course number four was an excellent jasmine rice with peas, greens, and a curry potato mix. I was to full by round number four to finish my meal.
Course number Five was a refreshing bowl of fresh fruit.
After finishing my meal and a bit of reading time it was time to go to sleep…in my full bed with down comforter and feather pillow:)
I curled up for 7 hours of sleep time . Greta woke me up at 6:30 a.m. to change out of my pajamas ,put on my makeup and return to my seat somewhat refreshed and ready for breakfast before landing.
I enjoyed some peppermint tea and a lovely carrot, pineapple and cranberry breakfast salad. It was so yummy that I made a mental note to make this when I return to Las Vegas.
After landing I headed directly to the
Lufthansa first class lounge. The woman at the front desk escorted me to the restaurant area where I enjoyed fresh cucumber and kiwi juice as well as fresh spinach and carrot juice. I also decided to partake in the best muesli with soy milk that I think I have ever eaten!!
I finally boarded the last leg of my flight to Berlin. It was only a short forty-five minutes but they were still serving a meal. I was not hungry in the slightest which turned out to be a very good thing…because the meal that I received was a hotdog sort of sausage meat with lentils .
